Your role as a Senior Mechanical Engineer?

As a Senior  Mechanical Engineer you boost the development of both Electric Powertrain technology and associated inverter technology. You will take the lead in contributing to the design and validation of components, systems and subsystems. e-Traction conforms to the Automotive APQP product development process and uses tools such as Creo parametric and Windchill. You will work with colleagues from various disciplines and with suppliers in a multi-disciplinary environment.

As we are working on cutting edge technology, our product development is continuously facing a number of design challenges. On top, cost engineering, design for manufacturing and reliability engineering will be focus elements during the development stage. If you feel at home in such a challenging environment, where you can make the difference, than this is your job!

Tasks

  • Write and maintain requirements;
  • Create designs and execute studies on new systems;
  • Coordinate engineering activities between internal departments and external suppliers;
  • Design, develop and validate mechanical constructions;
  • Analyse the available options for make or buy decisions;
  • Ensure integrity of design and mechanical deliverables in line with legal, safety and customer requirements;
  • Document all process steps for both internal and external use.

Profile

  • Master level in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace engineering;
  • At least 7 years of experience in an Automotive environment;
  • Experienced in reliability engineering, design for manufacturing, FEM and cost engineering;
  • Knowledge of vehicle engineering where Thermal engineering is a plus;
  • Being able to be an inspiring, motivating and supportive member of a team of technical professionals;
  • Experienced in Automotive development processes and tools (such as APQP, PPAP, FMEA, etc.);
  • Experience with 3D CAD and PLM is a must, experience with Creo parametric and Windchill is a plus;
  • Pro-active, team player, hands-on mentality, going the extra mile;
  • Experience with Electric or Hybrid Technology is a big plus;
  • You have good communication skills in English, both oral and written, where Dutch is a plus.

Your role as an Electronics Engineer

As an Electronics Engineer you participate in the development of both in-wheel motor technology and associated inverter technology. You will be a member of the electronics department and you will contribute to the design, validation and testing of functional safe hardware (inverter technology, power electronics, DSP, analog and digital circuits) and software. e-Traction conforms to the Automotive APQP product development process and uses tools such as MATLAB Simulink and Altium Designer. You will work with colleagues from various disciplines and with suppliers in a multi-disciplinary environment.

We design drive-lines in excess of 10kNm, with hundreds of kilowatts. Controlling these kinds of powers require high power inverters. Harnessing these powers efficiently and safely is our continuous challenge. If a thousand ampere or volts excite you, this is your job. The future of mobility is electric; and with this position you will develop into an experienced automotive electronics engineer, with a skill-set ready for the future!

Tasks

  • Design, develop and test electronic circuits;
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments and innovations;
  • Create architecture designs and execute studies on new systems;
  • Learn to design in line with legal, safety and customer requirements;
  • Write and maintain requirements;
  • Design according to the V-model;
  • Create documentation for designs. 

Profile

  • MS or BS (HBO/Tu) level in Electronics Engineering or related field
  • Affinity with automotive and power electronics;
  • Practical experience in the design, development and testing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), preferably using Altium Designer;
  • Experience in MATLAB/Simulink and C programming skills is a plus;
  • Analytical approach to problem-solving;
  • Pro-active, team player, hands-on mentality;
  • Good skills in process- and documentation management and reporting;
  • Good communication skills in English, both verbal and in writing, and Dutch is a plus;

Your role as a Software Engineer

e-Traction is looking for an enthusiastic Software Engineer (Junior level) for development, implementation, testing and documentation of software used for diagnostics and service activities. e-Traction has developed a diagnostic service application which is meeting all automotive industry standards such as: OTX, ODX, UDS and more. The technology employed to develop this solution is based on .NET WPF for the application. The portal website is developed using ASP.NET and MVC. As a Junior Software Engineer you will contribute actively to this development such that future changes and requested features will be added to the framework. Secondly you will provide an active contribution in the discussion with stakeholders regarding the functions and features of the application.

Your role as a Functional Safety Engineer

To boost the development of both in-wheel motor technology and the associated inverter technology we have an immediate need for a Functional Safety Engineer. The Functional Safety Engineer is responsible for the planning, specification and application of automotive functional safety activities according to ISO 26262. These activities will enhance the safety of our electric driveline solutions. The solutions are developed by means of “state of the art” technologies, methods and tools such as Enterprise Architect and Medini Analyze. You will work with colleagues from various disciplines in a multi-disciplinary environment.

As we are working on cutting edge technology, our development team is continuously facing a number of design challenges, were proving a solid safety concept is one of them. What we ask:

 

Tasks

  • Specifying and moderating functional safety analysis sessions.
  • Defining practical approaches for our developers by means of process definitions, methods and tools.
  • Defining verification and validation approaches to confirm the correct implementation of our safety concept.
  • Interacting with external functional safety experts for evaluation, assessment and certification purposes.

Profile

  • Master or Bachelor level in (Technical) Computer Science, Embedded Systems, Automotive or Electrical Engineering;
  • At least 3 years of experience in an equivalent position (preferred in an Automotive environment);
  • Good knowledge of functional safety in general. (ISO 26262, IEC61508 or comparable)
  • Knowledge of hardware and software development techniques and tools;

Tasks

  • Write and maintain requirements;
  • Create detailed designs and support with creating software architecture;

Assignment description
The common three-phase two-level inverter is most used due to its simplicity. Multiphase inverters can potentially offer desirable benefits as higher efficiency, lower EMI and lower cost. The assignment focusses on defining a figure of merit for an inverter, and challenging the regular threephase two-level inverter specially with a multiphase inverter which is obtained by parallel connected discrete IGBTs.

The assignment can be subdivided in the following parts

  • Investigating how to model circuit path of each IGBT and different scenarios of sharing current
  • Modelling and simulating the inverter by using a circuit analysis software
  • Designing schematic and drawing a PCB for the circuit
  • Testing the circuit and deriving conclusions

These vehicles are propelled by TheWheel® , a direct-drive in-wheel motor system that integrates a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with power electronics and fluid cooling into a wheel. e-Traction is constantly on the lookout for opportunities to make this product more robust, more efficient, and more powerful.

Nowadays PMSMs are the most commonly used motors for electric vehicles for their high torque densities. Nevertheless, synchronous reluctance machines (SynRMs) have attracted increasing attention from the automotive industry due to their robust structure and relatively low price. Most SynRMs discussed in literature are incorporating an integer-slot design with distributed windings, resulting in relatively large winding heads and hence a high end-winding loss and limited active length. This project is primarily aimed at a study on the feasibility of implementing concentrated windings into fractional-slot SynRMs, followed by the design of such a SynRM for a specific electric powertrain.

  • State of the art of SynRMs
  • Feasibility study of fractional-slot SynRMs with concentrated windings
  • Design and optimization of a fractional-slot SynRM for a specific electric powertrain

Assignment description
Electric motors for our commercial vehicle drive trains are powered by high power inverters. These are developed in house at e-Traction by an experienced design team. In order to lower the breakeven point for electrification we strive for state of the art efficiency and low investments for our customers. Direct water cooling of IGBTs could be a way to optimize our inverter designs. Comparing cooling strategies to find the optimum for the inverter will be the goal of this graduation assignment. A combination of theoretical modeling and practical experiments shall make this assignment a perfect learning opportunity for you as well as e-Traction!

In addition to the inverter, which is located inside the in-wheel motor, e-Traction’s electronic control technology series consist of a sophisticated powertrain control module (PCM).

Assignment description
This assignment focusses on the validation of generated and hand-coded software of our in-house developed high voltage inverter and code generated PCM. Both ECUs are extensively tested before they are used on the road. The validation in this assignment will contribute to the improvement of the current tests and to extend these tests. As more functionality is added, test cases should be updated or added to increase the test coverage. Part of this assignment is also to determine the current test coverage and set a goal for the final coverage.

After software is unit tested and tested with Model-In-the-Loop (MIL) simulations tests the software is flashed to the target hardware (ECU) and it’s functionality is tested with this so called Hardware-In-theLoop HIL) tests. A real-time PC is simulating all vehicle behaviour in which both ECUs can be tested.

The assignee is expected to follow the processes defined at e-Traction. An out-of-the-box thinking as well as a pro-active approach to problem solving are encouraged.

Software component for an in-wheel motor based powertrain

e-Traction’s electronic control technology series consist of a number of sophisticated powertrain control modules (PCM) and vehicle energy managers (VEM). The e-Traction Electric Control Units are products of years of development and optimization within heavy-duty automotive environments and have been tested and certified accordingly. Both TheControl PCM and TheControl VEM are easy to integrate within an existing Vehicle CAN J1939 environment and offer distinctive functionality and safety features.

Assignment description

The assignment consists in the development, implementation and validation of a software component which will be part of PCM software application. The component will integrate in the software architecture without any major changes to other components.

The assignee shall develop the software component, such that it can be simulated in a Model-In-the-Loop (MIL) environment and validated during unit and system testing. After MIL verification, the model will be used to generate code and as well as tested in a structured way to prove correct implementation that is suitable for integration to the PCM software application. The assignee is expected to follow the modelling guidelines and processes defined at e-Traction. An out-of-the-box thinking as well as a pro-active approach to problem solving are encouraged.

The research question

  • Develop, model and verify a software component for an in-wheel motor based powertrain.

The assignment consists of

  • Literature study of relevant areas of expertise which are directly connected to the required software component
  • Definition of requirements for the software component
  • Detailed design of the software component’s functionality
  • Modelling of the software component using MATLAB/Simulink and applying guidelines available at the company
  • Verification of the software component using MATLAB/Simulink by applying: Unit-test, MIL and system testing.

The core of e-Traction’s product portfolio is a program called TheMotion. TheMotion covers the three fundamental elements of electric drive-train systems: TheWheel, TheDrive and TheControl PCM.

Assignment description

This assignment is about contribution to the development of software tooling (EDiSA) necessary to perform the following activities with a number of ECUs present in our TheMotion system:

  • Symptom and error based diagnostics.
  • Calibration of parameters that influence the behaviour of the individual components.
  • The execution of test sequences during production, commissioning and test activities.
  • The download of ECU software and data.

EDiSA will be designed such that both local (by means of CANbus communication) and remote (by means of 3G/4G internet) connections are possible. Since EDiSA is applied in an automotive environment, many industry standards apply such as:

  • UDS (Unified Diagnostic Services)
  • ODX (Open Diagnostic Data Exchange)
  • OTX (Open Test sequence eXchange)
  • ISO-TP (Transport Layer) - ISO 15765-2
  • SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) J1939
  • CAN 2.0B
  • D-PDU API (ISO 22900-2) - Standardized Vehicle Access
  • D-Server API (ISO 22900)

From the technology side a lower-layer software solution is used from a supplier that provides an API towards our custom designed GUI. The software design is performed using C# .NET and the Windows Presentation Foundation. The candidate will focus on the following topics that are part of the assignment shown underneath in order of priority.

  • EDiSA requirements engineering
  • Authoring of ODX files that specify all ECU data
  • Authoring of OTX files that specify our ECU diagnostic sequences
  • Defining a functional and technical approach for guided diagnostics
  • Defining a technical approach for remote vehicle communication, data storage and analysis.

The research question

  • Specify, develop and validate diagnostic tooling functionality for an in-wheel motor based electric power-train.

The assignment consists of

  • Literature study on the automotive diagnostic domain, procedures and standards
  • Authoring of diagnostic data and procedures
  • Verification of EDiSA procedures
  • Documentation of the findings, design and verification results
