The patent pending e-Traction® Energy Management System ensures that an optimum solution is reached in the use of all the resources to arrive at what could very well be the most energy efficient automotive propulsion system.

Behind the lay-out of the e-Traction® System lies a basic principle that all components must be simple, inter-operable, easy to apply & service, and manageable over one and the same computer system. In the Whisper™ we almost managed to accomplish all that. There are still some remnants of the original vehicle management system of the VDL Berkhof Ambassador 200 that were deemed candidates for future replacement.

Below a brief illustration of the multitude of tasks of this system currently performs in the Whisper™:

  1. Translate relevant operator instructions to CANopen format
  2. Transmit this information to affected systems, including both TheWheel™ SM500/2FE units
  3. Supervise the precise execution of the instructions
  4. Monitor consumption of energy by each system
  5. Monitor temperature of each system with multiple sensors
  6. Monitor torque output by each traction system
  7. Perform ABS or Traction Control in case of mismatch between operator instructions and sensory data
  8. Convert steering inputs from operator to differentially power through the turn (reducing the need for power-steering)
  9. Control the variable speed 24 VDC power-steering pump (high pump speed at low km/h - off; when in park mode)
  10. Control 24 VDC air compressor needed for braking and suspension (off - when tanks fully pressurized)
  11. Monitor individual (strings of) cells of the Lithium-ion batteries
  12. Prevent inadvertent damage to individual batteries resulting from improper sensor readings
  13. Adjust air-conditioning of the battery compartment as needed
  14. Interface with the GPS to inhibit the running of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
  15. Adjust the speed of the APU to meet the demand of the batteries and/or traction system
  16. Control the Adaptive Current Control Unit (ACCU) system to produce the correct "blend" of voltage and amperage
  17. Control the e-Mission™ Particle Eliminator system for optimum result
  18. and many more..................
