There are two viable alternatives for equipping an SUV with the e-Traction® System. Space, performance expectations and cost determine the decision. From a performance point of view, ideally four TheWheel™ SM500/1AL units would be installed, but the cost would be considerable. Another solution is illustrated above with placement of four e-Traction® SM350/1 units where normally the axle differentials are located. The first option delivers roughly four times the amount of available torque. A Mercedes G-class Jeep received on indefinite loan from the Royal Netherlands Army has been converted with two TheWheel™ SM500/1AL’s in the rear. Future developments might include placement of two additional e-Traction® SM350/1’s or TheWheel™ SM500/1AL’s in the front.
