Made possible in part by a subsidy from:

Roll-on/Roll-off terminal tractors are notoriously large polluters both in terms of air and noise of their environment. When operating with diesel engines in the cargo hold of a vessel dangerous levels of air pollution result. Experiments with electric traction have thus far been promising but nevertheless disappointing. The benefits of electric traction are obvious both in terms of pollution and energy conservation. In addition, the braking action can be accomplished electrically by reverse powering the motors and thereby eliminating the enormous stresses on the power transfer mechanisms and the virtually eliminate brake wear.

We have been granted a subsidy by SenterNovem to cover part of the development cost for a hybrid powered Roll-on/Roll-off tractor for use by the Port of Rotterdam and others. This vehicle will be equipped in the rear with a metal version of our TheWheel™ SM700/3FE units which will have a peak load capacity on each wheel of 30 metric tons and in the front will have the aluminum (AL) version of the same motor with a peak load capacity of 7.5 metric tons. The diesel generator will be inhibited with the aid of position sensing devices as the vehicle approaches an enclosed space. The battery capacity will be sufficient to allow for extended operations without the need for the auxiliary generator.

While the new traction system has been finalized; negotiations are ongoing with potential partners with expertise is the area of vehicle construction. Suitable tires have already been identified. A special suspension and steering unit has been designed and is being verified for strength and durability. The software for the traction and power management systems management is being perfected. Expected completion date will be early 2005.
