At the request of a potential client a design study of an e-Traction® powered AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) Container Transporter was made in 2003.  It was contemplated at the time to use four TheWheel™ SM700/3FE units, but the impending development of TheWheel™ SM500/3FEXL, currently under serious consideration, will likely make this to be the preferred option as it would allow the use of more readily available smaller diameter tires, thus creating lower center of gravity and thereby enhancing safety.

Heavy duty double wishbone steering suspension arrangement for TheWheel™ SM500/3FEXL with a Knorr brake system.

Based on estimates at the time such a vehicle would cost roughly €50,000 less to purchase, would use 67% less fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by at least that much (see: Operational Efficiency). In summary, based on comparable data provided by the potential customer in 2005:

  • A conventionally powered container transporter operating at 0.48 kilometers per liter of diesel, costing on average €0.85 per liter, in a operational traveling of 25,000 KM per year, during the 10 year of its economic life will cost at least: €1,228,680.
  • A dual electric version of an e-Traction® Container Transporter is cheaper, has a fuel consumption of 1.24 kilometers per liter of diesel, resulting in a lifetime operating expense reduction of: €432,073 (ex equo) of which €254,423 is for fuel alone (@ €0.85 per liter).

Furthermore, the ecological payback is immeasurable and immediate.

Due to the abundantly clear substantial economic and ecologic benefits, the project's development was recently reinitiated at the urging of multiple interested and/or affected parties.
