Aside from the flexible power and data cable hookup, a simple mounting point for each of these suspension arms with our TheWheel™ SM500 series traction system is all that is required to obtain unrivaled flexible mobility with minimal design compromises to provide both traction and individual electric steering for each wheel!

A unique patent pending suspension arm has been developed, capable of supporting 1.5 metric tons per wheel, which enables TheWheel™ SM500/1 or TheWheel™ SM500/2 series to be electrically turned more than 180° around its mounting point. To the best of our knowledge, no other self propelled wheel is able to obtain this level of operational freedom. To complement this already unique suspension system, we recently added air suspension with a right height control mechanism. A heavy duty version for TheWheel™ SM500/2 and TheWheel™ SM700 series is currently being designed.

Steering can be done by electric motors mounted on each suspension arm and is controlled separately by joystick with proprietary hardware and software jointly called Spiral Control®. With this suspension arm on each corner of a vehicle it will indeed be possible to rotate around a central point by placing each at a 45° angle. By placing the wheels in perpendicular to the longitudinal axis the vehicle can move sideways.

e-Traction® Suspension Arm        with TheWheel™ SM500/1AL   or   with TheWheel™ SM500/2FE

Early design and application:

The first generation of the e-Traction® Suspension Arm, illustrated directly above, was successfully used in combination with TheWheel™ SM500/1AL on the front wheel drive People Mover for the Koningin Juliana Toren. In that case, however, at the client's specific request, steering was arranged mechanically instead of electrically as originally planned because the client intends to occasionally drive this vehicle on the public roads.
