The second electric direct-drive synchronous traction system introduced in September of 2003, ideally suited for  heavy trucks and buses.  This system, which was originally intended for the Roll-on/Roll-off tractor and/or Container Transporter currently under development, was first tested on the Whisper® 1. Whereas the system performed as planned, the energy efficiency disappointed (see: Whisper® 1), because the systems were grossly oversized, overweight, and underused in this particular application. Furthermore, in the absence of suitable tires, a modified low-pressure tractor tire was being used that severely impacted the rolling resistance.

A de-rated version, which will bear the identification TheWheel™ SM700/2, is currently being finalized with a 33% reduction in key performance parameters while maintaining the same diameter.

Performance Comparison of the Product Range:

Five wheel hub direct drive units have been designed and three have thus far been extensively tested in both aluminum and steel versions: they are the SM500/1, SM500/2 and SM700/3. The first non wheel hub version of this direct drive system is the SM350/1.   • TheWheel™ can easily be maintained from outside the vehicle.
  • TheWheel™, unlike other electric traction motors, can easily be removed for rarely needed scheduled maintenance.
  • No EMC radiation, because it is locked up inside the system and the controller is connected to the motor in the shortest possible way.  The power DC cables coming out of the system can also easily be shielded.
  • No magnetic radiation as the magnetic flux is guided inside the metal housing of the system. 
  • A continuously four-quadrant controlling of TheWheel™ per phase delivers the highest degree of safety.
