A direct-drive synchronous electric wheel hub system first introduced in
2001. Although it requires VDC power to operate, the built in CANopen
system regulates the also built in inverters to produce exactly the required AC
power to ensure optimum operation of the synchronous direct drive traction
motor. Suited for lightweight trucks, buses and SUV's. A same diameter but
somewhat wider and much more powerful
version, TheWheel™ SM500/2, is being used on the
e-Traction® Bus and the
Whisper™.

Performance Comparison of
the Product Range:
Five wheel hub direct drive units have been
designed and three have thus far been extensively tested in both aluminum and
steel versions: they are the SM500/1,
SM500/2 and SM700/3.
The first non wheel hub version of this direct drive system is the
SM350/1. For a detailed comparison of the individual
systems click on the table below for an enlarged
version of the table as a PDF image.

Key Benefits
- Simple installation with a DIN B5 flange of 250mm.
- Cabling harness reduced to only 2 main current cables +/-.
- Communication connection with InterControl or similar programmable logic controler through fiber optic
or CAT5 data cable.
- Absence of traction components gives more freedom "within"
the vehicle.
- Reduced overall weight.
- Absence of a gear box eliminates "empty torque necessity", with
a drastic reduction of rolling resistance of up to 50% saving in energy.
- Between 89 and 96% energy efficiency.
- Three high quality ball bearings eliminate the need for maintenance.
- Extremely quiet.
- Regeneration of energy during braking action which is stored in the
Lithium-Ion traction batteries.
- Traction Control, Anti Block System en Anti Rollback, Dynamic Hand brake.
- Solid-state brakes, using magnetic forces, eliminate wear and tear of the
braking system.
- Shaft permits attachment of hydraulic disk brake system.
- The electronic package is divided in 3 independent (failsafe) modules for
each wheel.
- TheWheel™
can easily be maintained from outside the vehicle.
- TheWheel™,
unlike other electric traction motors, can easily be removed
for rarely needed scheduled maintenance.
- No EMC radiation, because it is locked up inside the system and the
controller is connected to the motor in the shortest possible way. The
power DC cables coming out of the system can also easily be shielded.
- No magnetic radiation as the magnetic flux is guided inside the metal
housing of the system.
- A continuously four-quadrant controlling of TheWheel™ per phase delivers the
highest degree of safety.
