The e-Traction® System provides the Ultimate Flex-Fuel or Flex-Energy System

Unless the vehicle can manage solely with its on-board energy storage or receives external energy through for instance a pantograph (trolley bus), it is very likely that the system layout of an e-Traction® powered vehicle will use some form of auxiliary power to provide the ongoing energy requirement and recharge the batteries during normal operations. The kind of generator is the operator's choice. The choice can range from a fuel cell to a fossil fuel powered generator, whereby the access and affordability of the supply of hydrogen or fossil fuel chosen will become deciding factor. Having committed to a particular type of APU is not at all binding for the future. A diesel powered APU is quickly and easily replaceable with an ethanol alternative, provided that also the fuel storage tank and connections are suited for the vastly different properties of this alternative fuel.

The initial version of "the Whisper™" first experimented with an easily replaceable/serviceable self contained and enclosed silent marine grade diesel generator in which also housed the compressor for the brake and suspension system (see left picture above). The e-Traction® Bus experimented with silencing the entire engine compartment in which contained also the hydraulic pump for the power steering and the passenger compartment heating unit (see right picture above).

Because both the batteries and the traction system demand various levels DC (direct current) power it was decided to alter the generator configuration to enable us to produce exactly that. The newly developed and proprietary Adaptive Current Control Unit (ACCU) made it possible to match the DC demand of both the traction system and batteries in a limitless variety of situations by varying the speed of the diesel motor and the Amperage delivered.

The auxiliary power supply unit of "the Whisper™" has been completely rebuild for the Whisper™ and now includes a SM350 as the DC power producing generator. The major sub systems such as the air compressor for the brake and suspension system, the power steering pump, and the ACCU are all enclosed in this silent container that is mounted on rails and can easily be removed with quick-connects for maintenance. This unit can be replaced and importantly the bus returned to revenue service in roughly one hour.

The perfect complement to our fossil fueled generator is the newly developed e-Mission Particle Eliminator, which together with the lower fuel consumption of the collective e-Traction® System results in a reduction of 94% of the harmful particles compared to a conventionally powered comparable vehicle with a EuroNorm 4 exhaust system.
